Usain Bolt has swapped the finish line for a new frontier — promoting Jamaica to the world.

The eight-time Olympic gold medallist and global icon was officially named Jamaica’s Global Tourism Ambassador during the Jamaica Tourist Board’s (JTB) 70th anniversary celebration last week.

The appointment, announced by Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, recognises Bolt’s long-standing role as an unofficial face of the island. “Usain Bolt has been Jamaica’s unofficial ambassador for years through his extraordinary athletic achievements and magnetic personality,” Bartlett said. “This appointment formalises what the world already knows – that Usain embodies the spirit, resilience, and excellence that defines Jamaica.”

Cllr Princess Opeyemi Bright has been appointed Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, becoming the youngest person in the UK to hold the ceremonial role at just 29.

Her appointment was confirmed on Friday (May 16), during the annual mayor-making ceremony at Barking Town Hall. She takes over from outgoing mayor Cllr Moin Quadri.

Cllr Bright, who was elected to the council in 2018 at age 22, brings a strong background in community engagement and youth advocacy. Born in Homerton Hospital and a borough resident since 2009, she has served as a school governor and sits on the board of Agile Africa, a nonprofit that equips young people with tech skills. She is also active as a mentor and regularly hosts career webinars for youth in Nigeria.

In her inaugural speech, Cllr Bright pledged to use her mayoral year to promote inclusivity and community pride, saying:”It is not just a responsibility but a privilege to serve as a figurehead for the hopes and values of our community.”

UK rap duo Krept & Konan have announced another joint business venture—this time, a groundbreaking supermarket aimed at serving Black, Asian, and ethnic communities across the UK.

In collaboration with entrepreneur Kaysor Ali, the pair is launching Saveways, the nation’s first large-scale supermarket designed to cater specifically to the needs of diverse communities.

Set to open its doors on 1 February 2025 in Croydon, South London, Saveways will span an impressive 15,000 sq. ft. at 102 Beddington Lane, marking a significant step forward in inclusivity for the UK retail market.

The supermarket is expected to create over 30 job opportunities, addressing a long-standing gap in the market by providing a diverse range of products tailored to the needs of Black, Asian, and ethnic shoppers.

Reflecting on the venture, Krept & Konan expressed their excitement and pride:

To mark what would have been Aaliyah’s 46th birthday, Mattel has released a new collector Barbie doll in her likeness, with pre-orders quickly selling out. The doll, which is part of the Barbie Music Collector Series, features an outfit inspired by Aaliyah’s iconic look in the “One in a Million” music video, complete with a matching leather moto-style set.

A north London hairdresser played a pivotal role in the production of Wicked after being tasked with creating a custom wig for Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba, following a last-minute request from the film’s production team.

Maria-Josee Mampuya Yonda, owner of Josee’s Professional Braiding Studio in Seven Sisters, was approached to create a micro knotless braided wig after the original hairpiece was deemed too bulky, according to the BBC. Despite her extensive experience, including 30 years in the industry and a feature in Vogue, the urgency of the request made the task daunting.

“I wouldn’t lie, I was trembling. I was scared, I was worried,” Maria told the BBC. “I thought it wasn’t up to my strength, but I said I can do it.”

The Wicked storyline explores the complex friendship between Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman with green skin, played by Erivo, and Glinda, a popular and privileged girl, portrayed by Ariana Grande. The braided wig, designed to blend seamlessly into Erivo’s transformation as Elphaba, required precise craftsmanship.

Maria worked intensively for “three days and three nights” to complete the intricate piece, using techniques that mimic natural micro knotless braids.

Recounting the moment she received the assignment, Maria said, “I got the call and I told my daughters, ‘Oh, by the way, we have to do a wig that’s going to be used for a film, and the actress is called Cynthia.’”

VIOLA Davis was presented with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in entertainment at the inaugural Golden Gala: An Evening of Excellence on Friday (Jan 3), ahead of the Golden Globes today (Jan 5).

“This is the first award I was told that I won that made me cry,” Davis, 59, told USA TODAY before receiving the statuette. “Little Viola showed up who just never could imagine that she could evolve into this life, into this career. I just feel incredibly grateful today.”

Denzel Washington was among 19 people awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden in one of his final official acts before leaving office.

The Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honour, presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the United States’ prosperity, values, security, or to world peace.

Upon presenting Washington with the honour, the announcer stated:

“Denzel Washington is considered one of the greatest actors of our time. Over four decades on screen and stage, his portrayals of iconic figures and everyday people have earned him wide acclaim that includes two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, and a Tony Award so far.

Beyoncé has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the most RIAA-certified female artist of all time with 103 certified titles across her career, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced today (Dec 17).

“We are so excited to recognise the incredible talent, hard work and creative spirit reflected across diverse genres,” said RIAA President and COO Michele Ballantyne. “Beyoncé’s iconic catalogue has earned the achievement of most certified titles for a female artist in RIAA’s history. Congratulations on this crowning milestone, Beyoncé, Parkwood Entertainment, Columbia Records — and we see you, BeyHive, streaming on repeat!”

The RIAA’s Gold & Platinum Awards Program, which started in 1958, remains the industry’s primary measure of commercial success in music. The program honours artists with certifications like the Gold Record (500,000 units), Platinum (1,000,000), Multi-Platinum (2,000,000+), and Diamond (10,000,000+). These awards are presented once an artist’s team applies for certification.

Among Beyoncé’s certifications are 2x Platinum for Renaissance, 4x Platinum for Lemonade, and 7x Platinum for I Am... Sasha Fierce and Dangerously In Love. Many of her singles, such as “Me Myself and I” and “Formation,” have also received Platinum certifications.

Coco Gauff has been crowned the highest-paid female athlete of 2024, earning a reported $30.4 million.

This marks the 20-year-old’s second consecutive year atop the earnings leaderboard, according to Sportico.

Gauff’s impressive haul includes a historic $4.8 million in prize money from winning the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and lucrative endorsements with brands such as Naked Juice, Bose, Wheaties Cereal, Carol’s Daughter, and Rolex, further boosting her financial success.

That makes her only the third woman to earn more than $30 million a year, after Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.

Gauff’s 2024 season was filled with milestones, including her debut at the Paris Olympic Games. While she did not medal, she became the youngest athlete and the first tennis player to serve as the Olympic torchbearer.

Later in the year, she made history again by winning the China Open in October, becoming the first American to claim the title since Serena Williams in 2013.

Her year culminated with a victory at the WTA Finals in November, where she triumphed over Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng to claim her ninth WTA Tour singles title.

Tyler Perry’s relationship with Oprah Winfrey has truly come full circle.

What began with a chance encounter when Perry was working as a housekeeper at the Windsor Court Hotel has now blossomed into a profound professional partnership.

In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Perry shared how he first met Oprah and how, nearly two decades later, he’s directing her for the first time in his new film The Six Triple Eight.

Perry revealed that the first time he saw Oprah was not on her iconic talk show, but while he was working at the Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans. Employed in housekeeping, Perry knew Oprah was checking in and, eager to catch a glimpse of the media mogul, spent hours vacuuming the hallway outside her room.

“I was out in the hallway vacuuming, and I was vacuuming so long that people started to complain because I was just waiting for her to come,” Perry recalled. “I vacuumed that hallway for about two hours, and then she finally comes off the elevator. I was just like, ‘Ah!’”

When asked if he spoke to Oprah that day, Perry admitted he didn’t have the courage to approach her immediately. However, the next day, as Oprah was preparing to leave the hotel, Perry saw his opportunity. Still vacuuming, he nervously asked her for an autograph as she passed by.

“I stand up against the wall and say, ‘Tyler, say something. Say something.’ She’s passing me, she’s getting close to the elevator. I say, ‘Excuse me, can I have your autograph?’” Perry recalled. “She goes, ‘Why didn’t you say that when I was walking past you?’ So she walks over and she gives me her autograph. And it was a wonderful moment.”

Rihanna expressed her pride in A$AP Rocky’s influence on the fashion world, praising the rapper’s unique sense of style and its significant impact on the industry.

Speaking at the 38th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards on December 4, the Fenty Beauty founder shared that Rocky has always been a trendsetter.

However, Billboard emphasised her unique ability to create unforgettable moments, “indelible pieces of pop culture history,” that define her quarter-century of superstardom.

“The reasons why Beyoncé captured the top spot on our list were beyond numerous — ranging from her 25 years of timeless albums and singles, to her incalculable industry impact and influence on other artists, to her peerless raw talents as a singer and performer,” Billboard said.

Released without prior notice, GNX debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 319,000 album units, including both sales and streaming.
