BEYONCÉ has been named the greatest pop star of the 21st century by Billboard, securing the No. 1 spot on the magazine's list of the 25 greatest pop stars.
The announcement, made yesterday (Dec 3), highlighted Beyoncé's 25 years of influence in the music industry, noting her "timeless albums and singles," her unparalleled impact on other artists, and her extraordinary talents as a singer and performer.
However, Billboard emphasised her unique ability to create unforgettable moments, "indelible pieces of pop culture history," that define her quarter-century of superstardom.
"The reasons why Beyoncé captured the top spot on our list were beyond numerous — ranging from her 25 years of timeless albums and singles, to her incalculable industry impact and influence on other artists, to her peerless raw talents as a singer and performer,” Billboard said.
"But perhaps the most important of all was her singular ability to create moments: indelible pieces of pop culture history that she has generated over the course of her quarter century of superstardom, which are first and foremost all quintessentially Beyoncé."
Beyoncé, who was previously recognised as Billboard's greatest pop star of the year in 2003 and 2014, topped a list that included Taylor Swift at No. 2, Rihanna at No. 3, Drake at No. 4, Lady Gaga at No. 5, and Britney Spears at No. 6. Her husband, Jay-Z, ranked No. 16.
In addition to this recognition, Beyoncé is the most-decorated Grammy artist in history with 32 wins.
She recently became the most Grammy-nominated artist of all time, with 11 nominations for her acclaimed album Cowboy Carter, bringing her total career nominations to 99, surpassing her husband, who previously held the record with 88.
