IN A deeply emotional conversation on the Seasoned Sessions podcast, British journalist Ada Enechi shared a heartfelt moment with actress Cynthia Erivo, discussing the significance of her portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked and its personal resonance for Erivo as a queer Black woman.
As the interview began, Enechi, a journalist at BuzzFeed UK, could hardly contain her emotions when speaking about Erivo’s performance. “I just hope you know that when watching [“Wicked”]... I just hope you know...” Enechi began, her voice faltering as she struggled to find the words.
Her co-host, Hanifah Rahman, stepped in to support, saying, “It’s so powerful.”
Erivo, visibly moved and with tears in her eyes, responded simply, “Thank you very much.”
The powerful exchange underscored the emotional depth Erivo brings to the role of Elphaba, and the deeper connection between the character and her own identity.
In a recent interview with Ebony, Erivo had spoken about how her personal experiences informed her portrayal. “There is a mirror between Elphaba and Black women being othered and having to prove yourself when you walk into the room… I wanted [Elphaba] to be a bit of a nod and love story to Black women because that is what I am,” she explained.
