US tennis star Coco Gauff claimed a stunning victory at the China Open final on Sunday, defeating Karolina Muchová 6-1, 6-3. At just 20 years old, Gauff becomes the first American to win this tournament since Serena Williams in 2013, bringing her total WTA titles to eight.
In an impressive display, Gauff asserted her dominance early, wrapping up the first set in just 30 minutes. Despite Muchová’s recent success, including wins over top players like Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen, she struggled to keep pace with Gauff, who made only eight unforced errors compared to Muchová’s 24.
After a brief wobble at the start of the second set, where Muchová took a 2-0 lead, Gauff quickly broke back, showcasing her resilience and control. This victory marks Gauff's first title in nine months and comes after a coaching change, having recently added Matt Daly to her team following her split with longtime coach Brad Gilbert.
Taking to Instagram after the win, Gauff wrote: "I‘m happy with the fight I showed during the past two weeks here in Beijing and very grateful to walk away with the @chinaopen title❤️. Thank you for all of the love and support! #Histimingisperfect"
Gauff will next compete at the Wuhan Open as she continues her ascent in the rankings.
