Cynthia Erivo shares advice on rejection with young interviewer who missed out on "Wicked" role: “What is for you, will come to you”

DURING her press run for the Wicked movie, Cynthia Erivo had a touching moment with a young interviewer, who sought guidance on how to handle rejection after missing out on a role.

The interview, conducted for the British publication Cocoa Girl magazine, featured 9-year-old Isabelle, who shared her own experience of auditioning for the role of young Elphaba in the blockbuster film, only to lose out to Karis Musongole.

In the heartwarming exchange, Isabelle asked Erivo for advice on how to cope when "you don’t always get the role," a question that resonates deeply with anyone who's faced disappointment in their pursuits.

With empathy and wisdom, Erivo, who stars alongside Ariana Grande in Wicked, shared a perspective grounded in her own experiences with rejection and perseverance.

Erivo responded, "Every no is simply making room for a yes. What is for you, will come to you. What is not will miss you, and if it misses you, let it go. If it's meant to come back it will, right?" Her words, filled with comfort and clarity, underscored a valuable lesson: rejection is not the end of the road, but an opportunity for something better to come along.

The actress continued, offering Isabelle a deeper sense of peace with her journey: "Don't pine after Nos. It may feel hurtful in the beginning, but once you release that, it makes room for the things that are supposed to come to you." Erivo, known for her powerful performances on both stage and screen, has faced her own share of challenges and setbacks throughout her career, making her advice all the more poignant.

"I've had that. I know what it feels like," Erivo said, reflecting on her own personal journey. "And when I've let go of the things that don't go my way, very often things that are meant to go my way, come my way. This (Wicked movie) was one of those."

For many, the journey to success is far from linear. Erivo’s story serves as a reminder that rejection isn’t a reflection of one’s worth, but rather a stepping stone to greater things.

In her own career, she’s certainly proven this, with notable roles in films like Harriet, the upcoming Wicked, and a celebrated stage career. As she continues to break barriers and inspire a new generation, her words to Isabelle stand as a beacon of hope for all who dare to dream.

With a Tony, Grammy, and Oscar nomination already in her pocket, Erivo is just one Emmy win away from achieving EGOT status, further proving that perseverance and faith in one's journey can lead to extraordinary success.
