DENZEL Washington has made history at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, earning his 11th nomination for his role in Gladiator II. This milestone cements his place as the most-nominated Black actor in Golden Globe history, a testament to his legendary career and enduring impact on Hollywood.

Washington’s decades-long career, filled with powerful and varied performances, reaches another significant achievement with this recognition. Reflecting on his experience filming Gladiator II, Washington shared his deep admiration for the project and his role.

“Before I even worked with Sir Ridley Scott, I was a fan of his movies and his talent. But then he invited me into his tent – most recently into his Colosseum of Gladiator II – and the entire experience has been stunning,” Washington said in a statement. “The sheer size of this particular production and the incredible cast of actors and crew he assembled, not to mention what he literally built of ancient Rome, humbles me – it humbled me every day on set. And giving me Macrinus – to embody, to enjoy, to create – what an incredible honor this is, and has been.”

Washington’s historic nomination is part of an impressive and diverse line-up of Black nominees at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Actress Cynthia Erivo has also earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her commanding portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked.

In television, Black talent takes centre stage with nominations for Donald Glover and Quinta Brunson. Glover has earned a nomination for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his captivating performance in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Quinta Brunson, another trailblazer, received a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her role as Janine Teagues in Abbott Elementary.

Ayo Edebiri’s exceptional work in The Bear also earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Colman Domingo rounds out the impressive list of Black nominees with a nod for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his powerful portrayal in Sing Sing.

These nominations reflect the growing visibility and influence of Black talent in both film and television. As the Golden Globe Awards approach, we celebrate the incredible achievements of these artists, whose work continues to inspire audiences around the globe.

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will air live on January 5, 2025.
