Halle Berry re-wears her iconic 2002 Oscars gown as she walks the runway 22 years later: “There are moments that change our lives forever”

Updated: Nov 19

HALLE Berry sparked a wave of nostalgia when she graced the runway at Elie Saab’s latest fashion show, wearing one of the most iconic dresses in red-carpet history—the same stunning gown she wore to the 2002 Oscars.

That unforgettable night, Berry made history as the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Monster's Ball. As photos of her holding the Oscar and celebrating the groundbreaking achievement circulated worldwide, her Oscar dress became just as legendary.

Fast forward 22 years to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where the designer unveiled his latest collection against a dazzling, carnival-like backdrop. The show, aptly titled The 1001 Seasons of Elie Saab, featured an immersive, larger-than-life experience, showcasing 300 looks, with standout performances by Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello, and Nancy Ajram, all dressed in Saab’s couture creations. Céline Dion closed the show.

But beyond its sheer beauty, the dress held profound significance. For Berry, Saab, and the wider cultural landscape, it symbolised a pivotal moment. Not only was it the gown she wore when she made history as the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress, but it also marked a defining moment for Saab. Berry’s 2002 red-carpet appearance was instrumental in introducing the Lebanese designer to a broader global audience.

This special reunion at Saab’s 45th anniversary show also marked the first time that Berry and Saab met in person, 22 years after she wore his creation on that unforgettable night.

Sharing a video of her runway appearance on Instagram, Berry wrote: “There are some moments in life that just happen and they change our lives forever! Winning an Academy Award in my Elie Saab gown was one of those moments for me!”

She continued, “Thank you Mr. Saab for being a part of the tapestry of my life as we have been inextricably connected for 22 years now!”
