TO mark what would have been Aaliyah’s 46th birthday, Mattel has released a new collector Barbie doll in her likeness, with pre-orders quickly selling out. The doll, which is part of the Barbie Music Collector Series, features an outfit inspired by Aaliyah's iconic look in the “One in a Million” music video, complete with a matching leather moto-style set.

Aaliyah, who rose to stardom in the '90s with hits like “Back and Forth” and “At Your Best,” left an indelible mark on the music world before her tragic passing in 2001 at age 22. During her career, she received three American Music Awards and five Grammy nominations.

The doll was created in collaboration with Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, who shared his memories of his sister’s childhood love for Barbie. “I can vividly remember my sister playing with her favorite Barbie dolls for hours when we were kids,” said Haughton. “She would make them sing, dance and perform little concerts. My sister would be ecstatic to see her legacy celebrated this way, empowering fans to dream big and believe they can be anything that their hearts desire.”

Krista Berger, Mattel’s Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls, explained the company’s intention behind the doll. “We hope that the Aaliyah Barbie serves as a powerful reminder to her loyal fans and Barbie collectors everywhere that, like Aaliyah, they can unlock their limitless potential and achieve anything they set their minds to by embracing their passion and drive.”

While pre-orders have already sold out, additional Aaliyah dolls will be available in Target stores on January 26.
