Viola Davis to Receive Prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award at 2025 Golden Globes for her “monumental impact on the industry”

VIOLA Davis is set to receive one of Hollywood's most prestigious honours—the Cecil B. DeMille Award—at the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards.

Celebrated for her extraordinary talent and groundbreaking career, the 59-year-old actress will join the ranks of previous recipients such as Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, and Morgan Freeman.

“Thrilled! Overwhelmed! Honoured,” she wrote on Instagram after the news was announced.

Davis' journey to this moment is marked by a trail of achievements across film and television, earning seven Golden Globe nominations over the years. Her first win came in 2017, when she took home the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her powerful performance as Rose Lee Maxson in Fences.

She was also nominated for her roles in The Woman King (2023), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2021), The Help (2012), and Doubt (2009), as well as for her groundbreaking work in the ABC drama How to Get Away with Murder (2015, 2016).

Golden Globes President Helen Hoehne lauded Davis as a transformative force in Hollywood, stating: “Viola Davis is a luminary whose profound talent has continuously shifted the lens through which we see and understand film. Presenting her with the 2025 Cecil B. DeMille Award is not only an honour but a reflection of our admiration for her relentless dedication to her craft and her monumental impact on the industry. Viola's courage in portraying complex, powerful characters has broken barriers and paved new paths, making her an emblem of excellence and an ideal recipient of this prestigious award.”

Davis is one of the few stars to achieve EGOT status—winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and multiple Tony Awards. She won both a Tony and an Oscar for her role in Fences—on stage and on screen—and also earned a Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play for King Hedley II. Her Emmy Award came for her unforgettable portrayal of Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder, while her Grammy win in 2023 was for the narration of her memoir, Finding Me.

As one of the most respected figures in entertainment, Davis is now being recognised for her trailblazing career and her unparalleled contributions to film and television. The award, named after legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, is reserved for those who have made a lasting impact on the world of entertainment.

The 2025 Golden Globe Awards will air live on January 5, with comedian Nikki Glaser slated to host. The nominations will be announced on Dec 9.
